Introduction
Chondromalacia Patella is a painful knee condition that causes progressive erosion of the cartilage that cushions the patella (kneecap).

About
The patella or kneecap is a small, triangular bone that helps the quadriceps (thigh) muscles extend the knee joint. Chondromalacia Patella causes structural changes in the cushion of cartilage that sits underneath the patella. At the start of the disease, the cartilage behind the patella becomes moist and soft. Small holes start to appear in the cartilage, which grow larger as the condition worsens. The cartilage starts to fragment and the fissures can extend to the bones of the leg that lie underneath the patella. One cause of Chondromalacia Patella is overuse of the knee joint, particularly from sporting activities such as fencing, football, soccer and running. Chondromalacia Patella can also occur after an acute knee injury, such as a direct blow or fracture of the patella. Certain anatomical variations can increase a person's risk of developing Chondromalacia Patella. These variations include a group of structurally related, biomechanical factors that are collectively referred to as abnormal patella tracking or mal tracking of the patella. They include an unusual patella shape, unusual patella position, imbalances in the muscle power in the leg and balance. The symptoms of Chondromalacia Patella vary between people, but there is usually a dull, aching pain across the front of the knee during or after exercise that involves use of the knee. There may also be mild swelling of the knee joint, a feeling of puffiness in the joint and a noticeable cracking or popping sensation when the knee is moved.

Health care
Always consult your Doctor for the diagnosis and treatment of Chondromalacia Patella. The diagnosis of this condition is made after a thorough physical investigation where the Doctor moves and manipulates the affected knee joint. The Doctor may order further tests to be done on the knee joint, such as x-rays, CT scans or MRI scans. The treatment for Chondromalacia Patella involves avoiding the activities that have caused the condition. Many athletes must decrease, modify or stop regular training so their condition does not worsen. The symptoms of Chondromalacia Patella are usually managed by rest, applying ice to the joint and elevating the knee joint. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, such as Ibuprofen, can provide short-term pain relief and control inflammation in the knee. A Doctor may also recommend stretching and strengthening exercises to improve the condition. A Physiotherapist may also be required to massage and manipulate the joint. Many athletes with this condition respond well to treatment and can gradually resume their training.

Diet tips
- Eat a healthy, nutritious, well-balanced diet from a wide variety of food groups to maximise the repair process.
- Drink plenty of fresh juices made from raw vegetables such as beetroot, garlic and radish. Raw vegetables are high in valuable vitamins and other nutrients that will assist in bodily repair processes.

Vits/mins/herbs
- Vitamin C with bioflavonoids helps to reduce inflammation and repair connective tissue and collagen after injury.
- Evening Primrose Oil contains gamm-linolenic acid (GLA) which is a building block for anti-inflammatory chemicals in the body.
- Vitamin A and vitamin E help to repair connective tissue and cells.
- Bromelain can help reduce acute, painful inflammation following soft tissue injuries.
- Glucosamine sulphate or hydrochloride is a naturally occurring substance that stimulates the production of glycosaminoglycans and proteoglycans, two essential building blocks of cartilage. Taking Glucosamine as a supplement may help to reduce joint pain and protect joints from further deterioration. chondroitin is often combined with glucosamine and has been shown in trials to enhance its therapeutic effect.
