Introduction A Chalazion (also called a meibomian cyst) is a non-malignant swelling on the inner or outer surface of the eyelid resulting from obstruction of the meibomian glands.
About A Chalazion is caused by an inflammatory reaction to material trapped inside a duct leading from an oil-secreting gland (the meibomian gland) in the eyelid. At first the Chalazion is swollen and irritated. After a few days it resolves, leaving a painless lump in the eyelid which may last for months. Some will then disappear, but some will continue to grow and may become large enough to interfere with vision by blocking the cornea.
A Chalazion is not the same as a Stye , as the Chalazion is usually painless, does not contain pus and is usually not infected. Chalazia are more common in adults than children and may occur more often in people with Acne .
Health care For diagnosis of Chalazion, always consult your Doctor.
- Apply warm compresses for 15 minutes four times per day. More than 50% of Chalazia resolve with this treatment.
- If the Chalazion is large or recurrent, your Doctor may refer you to an Ophthlamologist for surgical drainage or steroid treatment.
- Antibiotics will not cure the condition, but may prevent secondary infection.
- Do not attempt to "squeeze" or prick the Chalazion yourself.
Diet tips .
- Increase your consumption of foods that have a high content of vitamin A. This includes fish, preferably grilled, tinned salmon and tuna. Add this to the diet at least two to three times a week. Also include foods rich in beta-carotene which is converted to vitamin A in the body.
- Include foods high in vitamin B6 (legumes (peas and beans), tuna, salmon and chicken and vitamin B3 (sunflower seeds).
- Fresh salads are also helpful. Make your own fruit juice at home and have at least three glasses per day.
- Drink plenty of filtered water - at least six glasses daily.
Vits/mins/herbs Vitamins and minerals may only be of assistance if dietary intake is inadequate. Always stay on the medication prescribed by your Doctor.
- Choline and inositol are important B vitamins for the eyes and brain. Lecithin is a good source of choline and inositol.
- Vitamin E and taurine have antioxidant properties that may help protect eye tissues.
- The herb Eyebright is used for eye problems both externally as a compress or eyewash, and internally in the form of a tea, liquid tincture or tablet. Tired, stinging, inflamed and/or sensitive eyes should respond well to this herb.
